Little Brother by Cory Doctorow is the kind of book that makes me remember why I took up writing in the first place. When I first heard an excerpt of it on Mur Lafferty's podcast "I Should be Writing" I knew that I would have to finish reading the book... and that after only hearing the first chapter... Simply, it blew me away. It has me fired up, charged, excited and motivated, not only about my various writing activities, but about my radio broadcasts as well, especially the ones where I create massive two-hour audio collages, like the upcoming Beauhemian Groove culture jam... (more about that Iluminatic experience on a later post, as the dates for it, in late July arrive).
Little Brother tells the story of a 17 year old hackers fight against the Department of Homeland Security after they injustly abduct him and his friends in the aftermath of a terrorist attack. Upon his release from an island where ... you'll just have to find out for yourself...
Aimed for the Young Adult market, the book has the potential to boost the already burgeoning youth movement of cultural creatives. It's filled with tidbits of real history (the beats, the civil rights movement) and real hacks. Its got slam bang action and emotional poignancy (out in the reading garden at the library where I work, one section brought tears to my eyes). I know that many adults will love it but I am going to do my level best to persuade all the kids in my life to read it. I want everyone to read it because it helps expose the very real threats to our liberties imposed by the Homeland Security Act and what teenagers with tenacity and intelligence can do to stop it. This book serves as a blueprint for revolution.
I'll also be sure to catch up now on all the other Cory Doctorow books I've missed.
